Razorback

• Director Russell Mulcahy made his feature debut here after building his reputation directing music videos for Duran Duran (including 'Hungry Like the Wolf' and 'Rio'), Queen, and AC/DC — the rapid-cut, high-style visual grammar of that MTV-era work carries straight into the film's attack sequences.
• Special-effects artist Bob McCarron built six animatronic razorback puppets for the production, including one rigged specifically to ram vehicles. The full-sized version reportedly cost around $250,000 and appears on screen only briefly.
• The film was shot largely around Broken Hill in outback New South Wales.
• Razorback earned about AUD $801,000 at the Australian box office against an estimated budget near AUD $5.5 million, and its U.S. run was even softer — roughly $150,000 — making it a commercial disappointment despite its cult reputation today.

The pig is a red herring. The real monster is the town of Gamulla itself — the Baker brothers function as its id, the kangaroo processing plant as its stomach, and the desert as its digestive tract. Every person Beth and Carl encounter is either complicit or consumed. Read this way, the razorback isn't supernatural; it's just the only honest predator in a settlement that's already eaten itself.

Jake Cullen's acquittal in the opening is the film's real horror. The jury doesn't believe a giant pig killed a child because the truth is too absurd, so a broken man walks free under a cloud of suspicion — and the rest of the film is punishment for that refusal to look. Every subsequent death is the outback collecting on a debt Gamulla tried to ignore. Cullen's own death, beaten and left for the boar by the Baker brothers, isn't a monster's random cruelty; it's a tab being paid.

Mulcahy's music-video grammar isn't stylistic decoration — it's the film's epistemology. The rapid cuts, the fog, the color-saturated hallucinations all signal that nobody in this story is processing reality correctly. The desert strips perception down to fragments, and the pig only appears in the gaps between cuts, in the moments your eyes can't fully resolve what they're seeing.

The Australian outback eats people. That's the thesis. When a baby vanishes from a porch in Gamulla, nobody believes the grandfather who was babysitting him — Jake Cullen — when he says a giant razorback boar smashed through the wall and carried the kid off. A jury acquits him anyway, for lack of evidence, but the town never lets it go. Two years later, American wildlife reporter Beth Winters disappears in the same stretch of desert while investigating a kangaroo-processing operation that grinds native animals into cheap pet food, and her husband Carl flies in from New York and follows her trail straight into a town that runs on canned kangaroo meat and silence. The pig is real. So are the brothers who run the plant and cover for it. The desert doesn't care which one kills you first. Mulcahy turns the outback into a living throat, and everybody's already inside it.
