TRIVIA
THEORIES
PLOT
  • Despite its 1950s-Idaho setting, the film was actually shot in and around Crossfield, Alberta, Canada — a UK/Canada co-production, with the flat prairie standing in for the story's Dust Bowl-style backdrop.
  • Cinematographer Dick Pope won Best Cinematography at the 1990 Sitges Film Festival for his work on the film; director Philip Ridley had the wheat fields spray-painted a brighter yellow and shot much of the exteriors at 'magic hour' to get the hyper-saturated look.
  • The film premiered at Cannes in 1990 to strong reviews, but Miramax gave it only a limited U.S. theatrical release, and it flopped hard, grossing just $17,042 domestically.
  • Ridley made the film on a budget of roughly $1.5 million, financed by the BBC, British Screen, and Zenith Productions, with Telefilm Canada backing the Alberta shoot.
  • It was actor Jeremy Cooper's screen debut as Seth Dove — one of only a handful of credits he ever had.
  • Philip Ridley cast Viggo Mortensen as Cameron Dove after meeting him during casting sessions in Los Angeles; it launched a long friendship and creative partnership between the two.
