• Despite its 1950s-Idaho setting, the film was actually shot in and around Crossfield, Alberta, Canada — a UK/Canada co-production, with the flat prairie standing in for the story's Dust Bowl-style backdrop.
• Cinematographer Dick Pope won Best Cinematography at the 1990 Sitges Film Festival for his work on the film; director Philip Ridley had the wheat fields spray-painted a brighter yellow and shot much of the exteriors at 'magic hour' to get the hyper-saturated look.
• The film premiered at Cannes in 1990 to strong reviews, but Miramax gave it only a limited U.S. theatrical release, and it flopped hard, grossing just $17,042 domestically.

Seth's belief that Dolphin Blue is a vampire may be a projection of his own family's decay — she's blamed at every moment of loss, letting a child's mind assign a face and a story to cruelty he can't otherwise process.

The atomic-bomb testing subplot positions Cameron's physical deterioration as America's original sin leaking into the heartland. Seth's world is already poisoned before Dolphin ever enters it — she isn't the infection, she's the scapegoat who arrives after.

Seth's habit of framing the adults around him as either monsters or victims, with no middle ground, reads as a child's coping framework for trauma piling up faster than he can process it — a way to make senseless cruelty (his father's death, his brother's decline, his friends' murders) legible by giving it a face, a car, and a story he can survive.

1950s rural Idaho unravels through eight-year-old Seth Dove's eyes. When Seth's friend Eben is found murdered, the sheriff wrongly pins it on Luke over a past accusation, and Luke douses himself in gasoline and burns himself alive. Convinced someone else is the real monster, Seth fixates on Dolphin Blue, the grieving English widow next door, certain she's a vampire. His older brother Cameron comes home from Pacific atomic-bomb testing, wasting away from radiation sickness Seth blames on Dolphin — even as the two fall in love. When a carload of drifters in a black Cadillac abducts and kills another of Seth's friends, Seth witnesses it and says nothing; later, still convinced Dolphin is the threat, he fails to warn her when the same men come for her too. Ridley buries American gothic in the wheat fields and dares you to dig it out.
