Requiem for a Vampire

• Jean Rollin reportedly wrote the entire script in just two days, pulling the scenario straight from his subconscious — he later called it his purest, most personal film for that reason.
• The two leads are established as working party clowns; Rollin never explains further, and the opening chase runs almost silent, with only about three lines of dialogue in the first thirteen minutes.
• Marie-Pierre Castel, a regular in Rollin films like The Nude Vampire and The Shiver of the Vampires, took the lead role of Marie because her twin sister and usual co-star Catherine Castel was pregnant and unavailable — Catherine does not appear in this film.
• The film's garish red-lit dungeon orgy/torture sequence, which clashes hard with the movie's dreamy tone elsewhere, was reportedly forced on Rollin by producer Sam Selsky, who wanted more commercial sex and violence in the picture.
• Much of the film was shot on location at the real Château de la Roche-Guyon (rented from the duchess who owned it), plus village and cemetery locations in France's Oise region.
• The film carries an 18 certificate from the BBFC in the UK, granted only after cuts were made to its dungeon rape and whipping sequence.

The clown makeup isn't random provocation — it's Rollin's thesis on performance and death. The girls are already wearing costumes when they arrive at the chateau, already playing dead. The vampires don't corrupt them; they reveal what was already true. The whole film is about how identity is a costume you can't take off.

The dungeon sequence, which Rollin reportedly disowned, functions as a meta-commentary on the film itself. The producer's demand for exploitation is mirrored on screen: the coven torturing the girls for spectacle is the same as the money men torturing Rollin's vision for profit. The scene becomes a document of its own compromised creation.

The ending isn't a rescue — it's a rejection. Faced with what continuing his bloodline would actually cost these two women, the vampire, the film's supposed monster, chooses to let his line die rather than take them. Frédéric, the flesh-and-blood man Marie sleeps with, does the opposite: the second things turn supernatural, he runs. Rollin's real villain isn't the vampire. It's the ordinary man who can't handle a woman who's seen too much.

Two young women, working party clowns fleeing a shootout gone wrong, torch the getaway car with a body inside and run through the woods, then a graveyard where one of them is nearly buried alive. Chased into the ruins of a Gothic chateau, they're drawn inside by vampire bats and stumble on the last survivor of a dying vampire bloodline. He needs a new bride to keep his line going, but there's a catch built into his own ritual: the women have to stay virgins to be turned. Michelle warms to the idea of eternal life; Marie has doubts, and when she sleeps with a stranger named Frédéric, she wrecks the vampire's plan and puts her bond with Michelle to the test. Rollin strips the story to almost no dialogue and drowns it in atmosphere — ruined stone, gothic dread, a dreamlike refusal to explain itself. In the end the vampire chooses to let his bloodline die rather than take the girls, and Marie and Michelle walk away together, while Frédéric — spooked by all the supernatural weirdness — bails.
