PLOT
- Revenge premiered in the Midnight Madness section of the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2017. Neon released it theatrically in the U.S. before it moved to Shudder for streaming.
- The film leans almost entirely on practical gore effects rather than CGI, including the infamous scene where a shard of glass is pulled from a man's foot -- the production reportedly ran through its fake blood supply repeatedly during the shoot.
- Director Coralie Fargeat has cited South Korean 'extreme cinema' (Oldboy, I Saw the Devil) along with Kill Bill, Mad Max, and Rambo as touchstones, and has said she deliberately built the film to invert action-genre camera cliches -- like the classic 'girl in the shower' shot -- that typically sexualize women on screen.
- Revenge was Fargeat's feature directorial debut. She went on to write and direct 2024's The Substance, which competed for the Palme d'Or at Cannes (Fargeat won Best Screenplay there) and carries the same neon-soaked body-horror sensibility she first sharpened here.
- Shooting conditions in Morocco were brutal -- temperatures swung from blistering heat to bitter cold, and Matilda Lutz spent much of the shoot barefoot and in a bikini, repeatedly soaked in fake blood and water.
