• Revenge premiered in the Midnight Madness section of the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2017. Neon released it theatrically in the U.S. before it moved to Shudder for streaming.
• The film leans almost entirely on practical gore effects rather than CGI, including the infamous scene where a shard of glass is pulled from a man's foot -- the production reportedly ran through its fake blood supply repeatedly during the shoot.
• Director Coralie Fargeat has cited South Korean 'extreme cinema' (Oldboy, I Saw the Devil) along with Kill Bill, Mad Max, and Rambo as touchstones, and has said she deliberately built the film to invert action-genre camera cliches -- like the classic 'girl in the shower' shot -- that typically sexualize women on screen.

Richard's desert house functions as a temple to fragile masculinity, and Jen's systematic dismantling of each man targets their specific performance of male dominance. Stan's sexual violence, Dimitri's willful blindness and passive complicity, Richard's controlling denial -- she doesn't just kill them, she humiliates the architecture of power each one represents before delivering the fatal blow.

The desert itself operates as a silent judge. The men treat the landscape as their property, their playground, their dumping ground. But the canyon swallows Jen and spits her back transformed, while the same terrain slowly grinds her attackers into meat. The environment chose sides the moment they pulled the trigger.

That's the elevator pitch, but Coralie Fargeat's feature debut weaponizes the setup into something nastier: a blood-soaked rebirth myth where Jen, the discarded mistress, is shoved off a cliff and left impaled on a broken tree branch, only to claw herself free, cauterize the wound with a fire-heated beer can, and come back with a grudge that metastasizes into pure survival instinct. Richard and his hunting buddies treat the desert like their private killing floor. Jen turns it into theirs. What begins as an exploitation-flavored assault narrative mutates into a neon-bright reckoning, and by the final act, nobody's clean.
