• Shot in mid-1976 on a roughly CA$600,000 budget, primarily at Batchawana Bay on Lake Superior near Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, with additional studio work done at Cinespace Studios in Kleinburg, Ontario.
• Released in the U.S. in 1978 by Aquarius Releasing — Terry Levene's grindhouse-and-genre distribution outfit — under the alternate title 'The Creeper.'
• Screenwriter Ian Sutherland was making his screenwriting debut with 'Rituals'; he and director Peter Carter reteamed five years later on 1982's 'Highpoint.'
• Director Peter Carter, English-born but based for years in Canadian television (credits include 'R.C.M.P.,' 'Seaway,' and 'Wojeck'), made 'Rituals' as only his second feature after 1972's 'The Rowdyman.' He died in 1982, five years after the film's release.
• Arriving three years before 'Friday the 13th' helped kick off the American slasher boom, 'Rituals' is frequently cited by genre historians as an early Canadian proto-slasher.
• The five-doctor ensemble is led by Hal Holbrook as neurologist Harry, alongside Lawrence Dane and Robin Gammell.

The film keeps its stalker's face hidden until the final act, but once he's revealed as a war veteran disfigured by a botched surgery, the wilderness reads as an inverted operating room. These are surgeons who spent their careers deciding whose damage could be fixed and whose couldn't — the film makes them live inside the verdict one of them once handed down. Do no harm, and harm finds you anyway.

The film's structure reads as a slow autopsy of male competence. These men trade diagnoses and gallows humor, but every tool in their professional arsenal fails. The reading: 'Rituals' isn't about a hunter in the woods — it's about the terror of expertise rendered useless, of men who fix bodies discovering they can't fix their own.

The progressively barefoot, stripped-down condition of the survivors doubles as a diagnosis of their own fall from status — by the time they're crawling through the bush with no boots, no gear, and no answers, the doctors have become exactly what their stalker was reduced to after his ruined operation: patients with no say in their own treatment, waiting on someone else's verdict.

Five surgeons trade their scalpels for hiking boots and head into the Northern Ontario wilderness for what's supposed to be an annual decompression trip. Somebody out there disagrees with their vacation plans. Their boots vanish overnight, then a decapitated deer head turns up outside camp with a snake coiled around its spine — a sick mockery of the medical caduegus symbol every one of them trained under. As the doctors scramble toward a distant dam for help, a bear trap, a beehive, and a silent stalker start picking them off one by one. Their collective medical expertise proves useless against whatever's hunting them through the scrub, and by the time the tormentor's face is finally revealed — a disfigured war veteran nursing a grudge over a botched operation — only one of the five is left standing to answer for it.
