Saint Maud

• Saint Maud was made for about £1.8 million, funded by Film4 and the BFI, and shot over roughly five weeks in late 2018 — Rose Glass added an extra week during post-production after realizing she needed additional footage.
• Backers initially worried Morfydd Clark seemed too warm and sympathetic to play Maud; Rose Glass fought for her and added an extra scene of Maud convulsing on the floor to make sure the character's darker, more frightening side came through.
• The BBFC passed Saint Maud uncut with a 15 certificate — not an 18 — despite scenes of devotional self-harm, including Maud burning her hand and lining her shoes with nails.
• Jennifer Ehle, who plays the dying dancer Amanda, is the daughter of actress Rosemary Harris and American novelist John Ehle. Her performance earned her a British Independent Film Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
• A24 acquired the film out of its Toronto International Film Festival Midnight Madness premiere in September 2019. Pandemic-related delays pushed the U.S. theatrical release to January 2021, where it earned a modest return relative to its budget.
• The angel wings that appear behind Maud in the final beach scene are deliberately unconvincing CGI — a choice meant to signal the moment as her private delusion rather than a genuine miracle, right before the film cuts to the grim reality underneath.

The film reads as a study of religious mania as relapse. Maud's faith isn't a conversion but a replacement addiction—she swaps self-destruction for salvation with the same compulsive intensity. The scene where she experiences an ecstatic, bodily 'visitation' mirrors the film's earlier drinking scenes: both are private, physical, and followed by shame. God is just the next thing she can't control.

Amanda and Maud are mirror images, not opposites. Amanda embraces her body's decay with defiant sensuality; Maud mortifies hers with desperate purity. Both are dying and both know it. When a suddenly cruel Amanda turns on Maud and coldly tells her 'He isn't real,' she's demolishing the same delusion Maud's faith depends on—that her suffering must mean something. The film suggests neither woman is wrong about what she needs to survive it.

The final beach sequence can be read as confirmation rather than tragedy: Maud achieves exactly what she asked for. She wanted proof of God and she got it—burning, unbearable proof. The film never tells you whether that makes her a saint or a casualty, and that refusal is the whole point.

A hospice nurse with a shattered past and a freshly minted Catholic conviction decides her new patient—a dying former choreographer drowning in booze and regret—is her ticket to salvation. Maud performs devotion like a woman trying to outrun something terrible. Whether the voice she answers is God's or her own psychosis remains deliberately, brutally ambiguous. Glass stages private faith as body horror: the flesh rebels, the spirit insists, and the gap between them fills with blood. The final shot answers nothing and punishes everything.
