Santa Sangre

• Jodorowsky based Santa Sangre loosely on the real case of Mexican serial killer Gregorio Cárdenas Hernández, the so-called 'Tacuba Strangler' — a chance encounter with Cárdenas in a Mexico City bar left Jodorowsky fascinated by how the killer had rehabilitated himself into a lawyer and public figure after his release.
• The film was made on a modest budget of roughly $787,000 — far less than the resources behind Jodorowsky's earlier cult films El Topo and The Holy Mountain — shot on location in Mexico City as a Mexico/Italy co-production.
• Director Alejandro Jodorowsky cast both of his real sons as Fenix: Axel Jodorowsky plays the adult, and younger brother Adan Jodorowsky plays the boy, adding real father-son weight to the film's themes of inherited trauma.

Fenix's mother is already dead for most of the film. The armless woman commanding him from the shadows is a grief-construct—Fenix is committing the murders himself, his mind splitting to avoid accountability. The scenes where she 'controls' his arms are dissociative episodes, not supernatural possession. The final mirror-smashing sequence is Fenix confronting that he has been alone the entire time.

The film operates as a literal exorcism of Jodorowsky's own childhood. Casting his sons Axel and Adan as Fenix at different ages, and his own influences as the fractured parents (the circus as art, the religious mother as spiritual dogma), Santa Sangre becomes Jodorowsky's psychomagic ritual performed on camera—killing the father who abandoned him and the mother who consumed him, then walking free.

The deaf-mute girl Alma isn't a love interest—she's Fenix's mirror. Both are silenced, both are kept as pets by systems that exploit them (his mother, her captors). Their final reunion isn't romantic redemption but two broken children recognizing each other's cages. The white dress she wears echoes Fenix's childhood, suggesting she is the innocence he was never allowed to keep.

A traumatized boy watches his parents destroy each other in the circus ring: after his mother catches his knife-throwing father with the tattooed lady and hurls acid on him, the father retaliates by hacking off her arms, then walks into the street and slits his own throat. Years later, Fenix escapes the asylum to become his armless mother's literal hands—she commands his limbs from behind him, dressing, eating, killing at her will. When she orders him to murder every woman who stirs his desire, Fenix's body becomes a battlefield between maternal possession and his own starving need for contact. Jodorowsky weaponizes circus surrealism into a full-scale assault on Freudian inheritance, where liberation means amputating yourself from the dead.
