TRIVIA
THEORIES
PLOT
  • Made on a reported budget of about $100,000, the film relied on real Arizona border locations and black-and-white still photography rather than expensive practical or digital effects to sell its horror.
  • It was written and directed by three UCLA film-school colleagues — Phil Guidry, Simon Herbert, and David Whelan — who set out to make a fully independent feature outside the studio system.
  • Rather than showing any onscreen creature effects, the film reveals its monsters only through a series of blurry black-and-white photographs (plus one late piece of video footage), letting extreme motion blur and the viewer's imagination do the work.
  • Real-life journalist and author Lawrence Ross appears as himself, playing the reporter who helps piece together Salazar's story from the recovered photos — a device that blurs the line between the film's fiction and real documentary journalism.
  • The film won Best Horror Feature honors at the Temecula Valley International Film Festival and picked up additional wins at the New Orleans Horror Film Festival (Best Director) and Nevermore Film Festival (Best Feature) during its 2015-2016 festival run.
  • Critics have repeatedly compared its found-footage structure to The Blair Witch Project, though Savageland folds in pointed commentary on U.S. border politics and immigration enforcement that Blair Witch never touched.
