Some viewers read the recovered photographs as genuinely supernatural evidence of a skinwalker or borderland cryptid, pointing to the images' depiction of a tall, emaciated figure unlike any human perpetrator. Under this reading, Salazar's catatonic silence isn't convenient guilt—it's psychological shielding after contact with something that defies processing.

A third interpretation holds that Salazar did commit the killings but under the influence of whatever the photographs captured, making the film less about whether he's guilty and more about whether the American legal system can even process a category of violence this alien. But Salazar's recovered photographs suggest something far older and far hungrier than any cartel hit.
