• The film was made on a budget of roughly 3 billion won (about $3 million USD) but was a severe commercial flop in South Korea — only around 73,142 admissions (roughly ₩512 million) against a break-even point near 1 million viewers — despite strong critical acclaim.
• Director Jang Joon-hwan has said the premise grew out of two things: dissatisfaction that the kidnapper's point of view was never explored in Misery (1990), and a crank internet post he stumbled on claiming Leonardo DiCaprio was secretly an alien plotting to conquer Earth by seducing human women.
• The film functions as an allegory for South Korea's 1997-98 IMF financial crisis: Byeong-gu's paranoid unraveling is tied to the era's mass layoffs and economic trauma, with Kang's corporation standing in for elites who profited while ordinary Koreans suffered.
• Cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo — who went on to shoot Na Hong-jin's The Wailing (2016) and Bong Joon-ho's Parasite (2019) — gave the film its queasy, saturated look, including a seamless exterior-to-interior camera move that was unprecedented in Korean cinema at the time.
• The film won the Golden Raven, the festival's grand prize, at the 2004 Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF), and built a cult following abroad partly through U.S. distribution on Tartan Films' Asia Extreme DVD label.
• It was remade in English as Bugonia (2025), directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival and grossed over $43 million worldwide.

The film operates as a literalized class-war allegory where Byeong-gu's psychosis is the inevitable psychological product of systemic economic violence. Kang's transformation isn't supernatural confirmation but the film's thesis: when capital has already devoured you like an alien parasite, the distinction between metaphor and monster collapses.

The ending's alien reveal is deliberately double-edged: it can be read as objective confirmation that Byeong-gu was right all along, or as a cosmic irony that arrives one beat too late to save him. The closing montage of still photographs from Byeong-gu's happier moments — with his father, mother, and Su-ni — plays less like vindication than elegy, refusing to let either reading settle.

Byeong-gu's treatment of his comatose mother and his girlfriend Su-ni mirrors his treatment of Kang: everyone is a prop in his messianic narrative. The film can be read as a study of how trauma and powerlessness curdle into the same authoritarian cruelty he believes he's fighting, making him and Kang structurally identical.

Byeong-gu is a mentally ill, meth-addicted beekeeper convinced that Earth faces imminent annihilation by extraterrestrial forces posing as human elites. His solution: abduct Kang Man-shik, the smug pharmaceutical-company CEO he believes is an alien commander, and torture him into revealing his alien identity before an approaching lunar eclipse. What follows is a deranged two-hander that ping-pongs between slapstick domesticity with Byeong-gu's circus-performer girlfriend Su-ni and escalating cruelty in a basement dungeon — cruelty rooted in the fact that Kang's company poisoned Byeong-gu's mother during a drug trial and left her comatose. The question of whether Kang is actually an alien invader or just another corporate villain gets blurrier with every scene, until the film detonates into apocalyptic tragedy that recontextualizes everything as either paranoid delusion or justified prophecy.
