His calm authority reads less as spiritual leadership than as patient corruption.

The film's central horror functions as a critique of clerical celibacy and repression itself, suggesting that the isolation ritual doesn't protect the deacons from demons but rather manufactures the spiritual vulnerability demons exploit. The locked doors keep grace out, not evil in.

Anghela Sta. Ana, the child apparition played by Rhed Bustamante, may not be purely demonic but a figure whose 'miracles' reveal the deacons' and clergy's corruption by contrast — making the film's horror as much a projection of guilty consciences as an external assault.

Four deacons are sequestered in a remote monastery for the seven days before their ordination — the period church tradition holds them most vulnerable to demonic temptation. Erik Matti strips religious devotion to its rotten core: the devil doesn't need to breach the walls when a girl calling herself Anghela, healing the sick with hands that later drip black liquid, is welcomed inside by the very clergy meant to guard against her. As apparitions wear familiar faces and buried sins fester, the monastery becomes less a fortress than a slaughterhouse for faith. The question isn't whether evil can reach them, but whether it was ever locked out to begin with.
