TRIVIA
THEORIES
PLOT
  • Willem Dafoe's transformation into Max Schreck took about three hours of makeup application a day. The look was created by hair/makeup designer Ann Buchanan with prosthetics designers Pauline Fowler and Julian Murray, and the team earned the film's Academy Award nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
  • Nicolas Cage produced the film through his company Saturn Films and originally intended to play Max Schreck himself before handing the role to Willem Dafoe. Cage said he'd always wanted John Malkovich to play Murnau.
  • The film was shot in Luxembourg on a reported $8 million budget, with production design deliberately echoing the expressionist shadows and distorted sets of German Expressionist cinema.
  • Dafoe earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for the role, losing to Benicio del Toro for Traffic.
  • Screenwriter Steven Katz first wrote the script in the late 1980s, drawing on the persistent real-world rumor that Max Schreck's gaunt, secretive off-screen persona meant he might not have been merely acting the part of Count Orlok.
  • The film premiered at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival and went on to strong reviews, landing a spot on Roger Ebert's list of the year's 10 best films.
