Shake, Rattle & Roll

• Shake, Rattle & Roll was the second-highest-grossing film at the 1984 Metro Manila Film Festival, trailing only Ang Panday IV — a huge showing for a horror anthology going up against an established action franchise.
• It launched what's now the longest-running film franchise in the Philippines and Southeast Asia: 17 entries and counting, with the most recent, Shake, Rattle & Roll: Evil Origins, released in December 2025.
• The film's three segments were directed by three different filmmakers: Emmanuel H. Borlaza handled the Ouija-board segment "Baso," Ishmael Bernal directed the possessed-refrigerator segment "Pridyider," and Peque Gallaga closed the film with "Manananggal."
• "Manananggal" became the breakout segment and made Gallaga's name in horror. He later said he believed he was the first in Philippine cinema to show the creature's severed lower half with "the intestines bubbling," and worked out the creature's wing design by asking, "How big do the wings need to be to carry the body of a woman?"
• Herbert Bautista and Irma Alegre starred as Douglas and Anita in "Manananggal" — a barrio courtship story that turns out to be covering for a Holy Week killing spree.

The "Baso" segment doesn't just raise ghosts — it makes the possessed teens replay a centuries-old Spanish colonial love triangle almost beat for beat, which reads as a comment on how old wounds from occupation don't stay buried; each new generation risks re-enacting the same tragedy without knowing it.

"Pridyider" ties its horror to a very domestic object: the refrigerator hiding a dead rapist-killer's victims, now killing again inside a single mother's new home. It plays as a warning about how violence against women gets literally stored and passed down inside a household, hidden in the most mundane fixture in the house.

"Manananggal" sets its courtship-gone-wrong story during Holy Week, the community's most pious stretch of the calendar — which makes the reveal that horror was hiding in the girl next door land as a comment on how danger hides behind exactly the moments a community feels safest and most watched-over.

Three segments, three directors, one anthology — this is the film that launched the longest-running horror franchise in Philippine cinema.
