• Cronenberg shot the film in fifteen days on Nuns' Island in Montreal (Aug 21-Sept 17, 1974) with a budget originally set at $115,000 CAD that ballooned to roughly $179,000 by the end — he later said, "Suddenly I had fifteen days to learn how to make a movie."
• The Starliner Towers set was the real Mies van der Rohe-designed high-rise on Nuns' Island; the production was so cash-strapped that actual tenants loaned out their own apartments for interiors, largely unaltered.
• Makeup effects were built by Joe Blasco, who pioneered the use of "blatters" -- condoms and balloons inflated beneath fake skin -- to create the pulsating, worm-like parasites; Blasco reportedly took the low-budget job mainly to do Barbara Steele's makeup.
• The film's Canadian Film Development Corporation funding sparked a real political firestorm: critic Robert Fulford's September 1975 Saturday Night essay (under the pen name Marshall Delaney), "You Should Know How Bad This Film Is. After All, You Paid For It," attacked the taxpayer-backed production and got the topic debated in Canada's House of Commons -- Cronenberg later said the fallout got him evicted from his apartment over a morality clause.
• Despite the outrage back home, the film was a commercial hit, in time becoming one of the most profitable Canadian productions made up to that point, especially in Ontario and Quebec.
• In the UK, the BBFC passed Shivers uncut with an X certificate on September 9, 1975 -- no cuts were required, contrary to some accounts of its overseas reception.

The parasite functions as a literal STD metaphor but also a critique of communitarian ideology: the infected don't just spread disease, they form a hive-mind collective that dissolves individual autonomy. Cronenberg stages the final exodus as both apocalypse and liberation, refusing to code the new society as purely dystopian.

The high-rise setting anticipates the Ballardian architecture Cronenberg would later embrace in Shivers' spiritual successor Rabid and beyond. The building itself is the organism, and the parasites merely activate what sealed-environment living already implies about controlled, sterile modernity.

Hobbes, the rogue scientist, is framed as villain but the film's ambivalence suggests he's a twisted pioneer. His creation works exactly as intended: it eliminates disease by making the body itself obsolete. The horror isn't failure but success on terms nobody was ready to accept.

Resident doctor Roger St. Luc watches the complex collapse into orgiastic chaos, culminating in a final sequence where the infected drive off to seed the mainland. Cronenberg's first commercial feature announces every obsession he'd chase for decades.
