Speak No Evil

• Speak No Evil is written and directed by Christian Tafdrup, who co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Mads Tafdrup — the two set out, in Christian's words, to make the most disturbing film ever made in Denmark, built around the idea that politeness can get you killed.
• The film premiered in the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival on January 21-22, 2022 (not Tribeca) — Shudder acquired North American rights around the premiere, and the film opened theatrically via Shudder/IFC Midnight on September 9, 2022.
• Dialogue is trilingual by design: English is the language the two families use with each other, while Bjørn, Louise, and Agnes speak Danish among themselves and Patrick and Karin speak Dutch among themselves — and only the Danish is subtitled for English-speaking viewers, a device meant to align the audience with the Danish family and keep the Dutch hosts opaque.
• Tafdrup has cited Michael Haneke's Funny Games as a touchstone but said he deliberately inverted it: Haneke's family is doomed from the first minutes, while Bjørn and Louise could leave at almost any point and simply don't — that refusal to leave is the entire engine of the film.
• Marius Damslev plays Abel, the hosts' silent 'son.' The film's central twist, confirmed by a photo album Bjørn finds late in the story, is that Abel isn't Patrick and Karin's child at all — he was taken from an earlier family the couple killed on a previous trip, and his tongue was cut out to keep him from talking.
• James Watkins wrote and directed a 2024 English-language remake for Blumhouse and Universal starring James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, and Aisling Franciosi. It opened in US theaters September 13, 2024, and grossed roughly $77 million worldwide against a $15 million budget.

Patrick and Karin have run this exact play before. Abel is not their son but a trophy from a previous family they dismantled the same way — his tongue cut to prevent him from identifying them or warning future guests. The farmhouse is a kill room dressed as a home. (This one isn't really speculation — it's the film's actual reveal, confirmed by the photo album Bjørn finds near the end.)

The film functions as a dark allegory for social contract theory. Every horror stems from the Danish family's inability to break etiquette; the Dutch couple weaponizes politeness as a cage. Bjørn's final silence isn't defeat but the logical endpoint of a man who never learned to say no.

Patrick's 'doctor' story is one of the film's quieter, nastier reveals: he admits to Karin, in front of the guests, that he lied about being a doctor and doesn't actually work at all. That means the tongue-cutting isn't done with any medical precision — it's done by a man who has simply done it enough times to be calm about it, which is worse. The costume of respectability, not any real skill, is the weapon.

A Danish family bonds with a Dutch couple met on vacation in Tuscany and accepts an invitation to their remote farmhouse in the Netherlands. What starts as awkward social friction curdles into something worse. Hosts Patrick and Karin push boundaries with practiced ease — inappropriate touches, uncomfortable jokes, unexplained cruelty toward their mute young "son" Abel. Director Christian Tafdrup builds dread from the most mundane interactions, weaponizing politeness itself as the trap springs shut. By the time Bjørn and Louise recognize the pattern, escape is off the table. The film dares you to keep watching as good manners become the blade.
