PLOT
- Principal photography ran just 20 days, filmed in and around an abandoned gas station near Oklahoma City -- a fraction of the 35-to-60-day schedule typical of a studio production.
- Director Toby Wilkins built the film around a parasitic-creature concept he'd been developing with a friend, aiming for a threat that infects and hijacks its hosts rather than simply killing them -- body horror through control, not just gore.
- The creature effects were designed and built by Quantum Creation FX under special make-up effects supervisor Justin Raleigh, with much of the 'infected' movement performed live by a gymnast, a mime, and a stuntperson to make it read as unnatural.
- Splinter premiered as the centerpiece film at the 2008 Screamfest Horror Film Festival in Los Angeles, where it swept six awards including Best Picture, Best Directing, and Best Make-Up, ahead of a limited theatrical release via Magnet Releasing, Magnolia Pictures' genre label.
- Much of Shea Whigham's dialogue as escaped convict Dennis was ad-libbed on set, and critics regularly single out his performance as the film's standout, with more of an arc than any other character.
- Wilkins cut his teeth directing 'Tales from the Grudge' (2006), a trio of Sam Raimi-backed short films (Hotel, School, House) made to promote The Grudge 2 -- the connection helped land him the Splinter job and led to him later directing The Grudge 3.
