THEORIES
PLOT
- Made on a budget of roughly ₹23-25 crore, the film grossed over ₹180 crore worldwide, becoming one of the most profitable Bollywood films of 2018 (roughly 7-8x its budget).
- The film is loosely based on the real urban legend of 'Nale Ba' ("Naale Baa" — Kannada for 'come tomorrow') from Karnataka, where residents wrote the phrase on their doors to trick a wandering spirit into postponing its visit.
- Pankaj Tripathi signed on to play the paranormal-obsessed bookseller Rudra after director Amar Kaushik met him at a film festival where Tripathi had seen and loved Kaushik's short film 'Aaba' — Tripathi agreed to the role on the spot after hearing the story narrated, without having read the script.
- Stree's success helped launch what's now branded the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, which officially includes Stree 2 (2024), Bhediya (2022), Munjya (2024), and Thamma (2025); Roohi (2020) was floated early on as a possible connected entry but was ultimately not folded into the official canon.
- The film picked up 10 nominations at the 64th Filmfare Awards — including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor for Rajkummar Rao — winning Best Debut Director for Amar Kaushik.
