PLOT
- The film's opening mass-suicide sequence — 54 schoolgirls jumping in front of a train — was shot guerrilla-style on the platform at Tokyo's real Shinjuku Station, largely without formal permission from rail authorities; director Sion Sono directed his young cast more like a live performance piece than a conventional stunt sequence.
- The cult leader Genesis, who holds court from a secret underground bowling alley strung with sheet-wrapped victims, was played by Japanese glam-rock musician Rolly (of the band Scanch) — not a teenage hacker. The hacker who feeds police cryptic clues is a separate character known only as 'the Bat.'
- Dessert, the J-pop group tied to several of the suicides, wasn't a real act — it was created specifically for the film, with its songs (including 'Mail Me') composed by Tomoki Hasegawa.
- The film premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival in October 2001, then played Rotterdam and Fantasia — where it won the Jury Prize for Most Ground-Breaking Film in 2003 — but never got a wide U.S. theatrical release; it reached American audiences only via TLA Releasing's subtitled DVD in November 2003.
- Suicide Club arrived amid a real spike in Japan's youth suicide rate (national suicides topped 30,000 a year by 2000), and its guerrilla-shot opening drew public complaints from Tokyo Metro officials over how realistic it looked.
- Sono returned to the same story in 2005 with Noriko's Dinner Table, a prequel/companion film that reveals the cult leader orchestrated the opening train suicide as an initiation exercise for the 'family' of recruits she'd assembled.
