Suspiria

• Suspiria was one of the last films printed using Technicolor's three-strip dye-transfer process — Argento used the last functioning dye-transfer machine at the Technicolor plant in Rome, which shut the process down entirely in 1980, a few years after Suspiria's release.
• Jessica Harper landed the lead after Dario Argento saw her in Brian De Palma's 'Phantom of the Paradise' (1974). She reportedly turned down a role in Woody Allen's 'Annie Hall' to take the part instead.
• For the famous 'maggot rain' scene, the wide shots of maggots falling from the ceiling were actually created with white rice — but Harper has said Argento showed her a bag of real, live maggots just before filming the close-up shots.

• Goblin scored the film from demo tracks Claudio Simonetti wrote after reading the script, then spent roughly three months recording — a big upgrade from the overnight scramble they'd had on Argento's earlier 'Deep Red.' Argento played the music on set during shooting to unsettle the cast.
• Despite a persistent rumor, Suspiria never actually appeared on the UK's official DPP 'video nasties' prosecution list. It played UK cinemas with cuts and wasn't released uncut on home video there until 1998.

Suzy is a latent witch from the start, and the academy's decision to enroll her is no accident. Her fainting spells, sleepwalking, and strange susceptibility to the building's psychic pull suggest the coven is slowly awakening her powers rather than tormenting her.

The academy is not merely a front for a coven but a living organism, an extension of Mater Suspiriorum herself. The building reacts to the coven's rituals, seals its own doors, and ultimately collapses as Suzy kills the Mother, making the school the true protagonist of the final act.

The film operates as a secret fairy tale rather than a horror narrative. Suzy's journey follows the structure of a Grimm story: the naive girl, the enchanted castle, the secret room, the old witch, and the act of destruction that breaks the spell.

Suzy Bannion steps off a flight into Freiburg and a downpour of blood-red light, walking straight into a nightmare wearing a ballet academy's skin. The Tanz Akademie is a finishing school for witches, and the faculty knows she's arrived before she does. Dancers vanish into barbed wire, maggots rain from the ceiling, and a blind pianist gets his throat torn out by his own seeing-eye dog. Suzy keeps dancing. The building breathes. The coven needs her, or maybe she needs the coven, and Mater Suspiriorum is hungry.
