Sweet Home

• The film and Capcom's Famicom RPG Sweet Home were developed in tandem, not as a simultaneous release: the film hit Japanese theaters (via Toho) in January 1989, while the game didn't ship until that December. Director Kiyoshi Kurosawa and producer Juzo Itami served as supervisor and producer on the game.
• Legendary Hollywood makeup effects artist Dick Smith, the man behind The Exorcist's transformation and Little Big Man's aging effects, handled the film's grotesque practical gore effects.
• Sweet Home never got an official release outside Japan, and its Japan-only VHS and laserdisc releases became so scarce that collector copies have reportedly sold for up to $160 apiece, feeding a slow-building cult reputation over the decades.
• Capcom's Resident Evil (1996) began life as a proposed remake of the Sweet Home video game, not a licensed film adaptation. Producer Tokuro Fujiwara (who had directed Sweet Home) tasked a young Shinji Mikami with building a horror game on similar mechanics; the project evolved into its own IP, passing through the working titles "Psycho" and "Biohazard" before its Western release.
• After the theatrical run, producer Juzo Itami re-cut and re-shot portions of the film for its home-video and TV release without Kurosawa's approval. An outraged Kurosawa sued Itami and Itami Productions, an almost unheard-of move for a director in the Japanese film industry at the time, and ultimately lost the suit.

The Mamiya mansion doesn't just contain Lady Mamiya's grief, it's shaped by it. Rooms that seem safe turn hostile, walls seal without warning, and the geography keeps shifting around whoever gets closest to Emi. It reads less like a random haunting and more like a mother's rage re-staging the day of the fire on the one child in the house who reminds it of what it lost.

The "Home Sweet Home" fresco covering the hidden room isn't decoration, it's a message Ichiro left behind before he vanished from the story: a plea painted over and over in the one place his wife's madness couldn't erase it. The crew treats it as a spooky title-drop; it plays more like the last thing a husband could leave for whoever eventually came looking.

Kazuo lost his own wife when Emi was a toddler, which is exactly why Lady Mamiya's ghost fixates on him and Emi specifically. She isn't hunting strangers, she's recognizing another widowed parent and a motherless child, the same shape her own family took right before it broke. The house isn't punishing fathers so much as trying to keep the family it thinks it's found.

A small TV crew treks to the crumbling mansion of dead painter Ichiro Mamiya to document and restore the frescoes he left behind, including a hidden room whose walls are covered edge-to-edge with a single painted phrase: "Home Sweet Home." The crew includes widower Kazuo, his young daughter Emi, family friend Akiko (whom Emi treats like an older sister), reporter and art restorer Asuka, and photographer Taguchi. Local caretaker Yamamura fills them in on the house's history: thirty years earlier, Ichiro's wife accidentally let her toddler son burn to death in the mansion's incinerator, and grief and disfigurement drove her mad. She began kidnapping and killing village children to be her dead son's "playmates," and when villagers caught her, she threw herself into the same furnace. Her vengeful ghost still haunts the mansion, picking off the crew one by one and briefly possessing Asuka. When she abducts Emi, it's Akiko who goes after her, ultimately giving Lady Mamiya's spirit the reunion with her son it's been chasing for decades, and buying just enough time for Kazuo, Akiko, and Emi to escape as the mansion collapses behind them.
