Symptoms

• Filmed on real English locations rather than a backlot: the country-house exteriors were shot at Harefield Grove in Harefield, London, with studio work done at Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, and a village scene shot on the High Street in Pinner, Middlesex.
• Screened as the official British entry at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival — a rare honor for a low-budget psychological horror film, and notable given Larraz was a Spanish-born director working in the UK.
• Angela Pleasence landed the lead role of Helen almost by accident: Jean Seberg was originally cast but had to drop out at the last minute because she wasn't a member of the Actors' Equity Association, opening the door for Pleasence in what became the first true lead role of her career.

Helen and Anne are not merely friends but two halves of a fractured psyche — Anne the functional surface, Helen the repressed violence beneath. The estate becomes a skull, and Helen's 'care' is a mechanism of self-destruction playing out in real time.

Read as a ghost story with the ghost internalized: Helen's guilt over Cora, a woman she killed in a jealous rage, manifests as a phantom presence she can't let go of — and Anne is unknowingly being groomed into the same obsessive cycle.

Larraz constructs the film as a vampire story with the bloodletting removed. Helen drains her guests through emotional parasitism rather than fangs — the lake is her lair, the isolation her hunting ground, and the film's daytime horror a deliberate inversion of gothic nocturnal convention.

Helen Ramsey invites her friend Anne Weston to her secluded English country manor, promising rest and company after Helen's own return from time abroad. What Anne doesn't know is that Helen's previous houseguest, Cora, vanished under circumstances Helen refuses to clarify. As the days pass, Helen's possessiveness curdles into something sharper — quiet sabotage, creeping surveillance, and a sexual jealousy that flares hard once Anne's boyfriend John shows up. Larraz frames the estate as a trap disguised as a sanctuary, where every drawn curtain and locked door tightens the noose. By the time the lake gives up Cora's body, Helen's unraveling grip on reality — and the violence that comes with it — has become the most terrifying thing in the house.
