PLOT
- The film was originally scripted without Dracula at all — Hammer intended Ralph Bates's Lord Courtley to become the franchise's new vampire villain, but Warner Bros. refused to release a Hammer Dracula picture without Dracula in it, forcing a last-minute rewrite that brought Christopher Lee back.
- Director Peter Sasdy was making his feature debut. He came up through British TV drama at ATV/ABC, directing episodes of Emergency Ward 10 and Ghost Squad and helming Bronte adaptations like Wuthering Heights and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall before Hammer hired him.
- Principal photography ran at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire in late 1969, with exteriors shot at St Andrew's Church in Totteridge, Scratchwood and Aldenham Park, and Highgate Cemetery.
- The BBFC trimmed footage to secure an X certificate — including blood-spurt shots from Paxton's staking, a close-up of Dracula's bloodied teeth, and a brief brothel nudity shot. The brothel scenes weren't fully restored until home video.
- Warner Bros./Seven Arts distributed the film in the US, where it reportedly hit number one at the box office on a double bill with Trog; in the UK it was paired with Crescendo.
