Taste the Blood of Dracula

• The film was originally scripted without Dracula at all — Hammer intended Ralph Bates's Lord Courtley to become the franchise's new vampire villain, but Warner Bros. refused to release a Hammer Dracula picture without Dracula in it, forcing a last-minute rewrite that brought Christopher Lee back.
• Director Peter Sasdy was making his feature debut. He came up through British TV drama at ATV/ABC, directing episodes of Emergency Ward 10 and Ghost Squad and helming Bronte adaptations like Wuthering Heights and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall before Hammer hired him.
• Principal photography ran at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire in late 1969, with exteriors shot at St Andrew's Church in Totteridge, Scratchwood and Aldenham Park, and Highgate Cemetery.
• The BBFC trimmed footage to secure an X certificate — including blood-spurt shots from Paxton's staking, a close-up of Dracula's bloodied teeth, and a brief brothel nudity shot. The brothel scenes weren't fully restored until home video.
• Warner Bros./Seven Arts distributed the film in the US, where it reportedly hit number one at the box office on a double bill with Trog; in the UK it was paired with Crescendo.

Dracula never personally does the seducing in this film — Courtley performs the summoning, and then it's the hypnotized children of his killers who do the actual killing. Read that way, the Count isn't a monster who acts, he's a curse that delegates. The three fathers don't just get punished by Dracula; they get punished by what they raised, because Alice, Lucy, and Jeremy are already primed to snap the moment something dark hands them permission.

The Victorian setting is no accident. Every adult male here is a hypocrite preaching charity and respectability by day while slumming brothels by night. Dracula functions as the return of the repressed — the fathers' secret sins literally rising from a corpse to consume the children they were supposed to be protecting. The Count doesn't hunt anybody down; the fathers hand their own kids over the moment they get tangled up with Courtley.

Paul is the only child in the story Dracula never gets his hooks into, and that's the real point of the ending. Everyone else his age gets turned into a weapon: his sister Lucy stakes their own father, Jeremy kills his, and Alice is hypnotized into nearly helping finish the job. Paul breaks the cycle not with a stake swung in anger but by literally rebuilding the church his elders desecrated. The film's answer to inherited sin isn't revenge — it's restoration.

Three respectable Victorian gentlemen — Hargood, Paxton, and Secker — front a charity circle by day and slum it in brothels by night. There they fall in with Lord Courtley, a young libertine disowned by his own father for staging a black mass. Courtley talks the trio into buying Dracula's preserved blood, cloak, and ring off a traveler named Weller, then leads a resurrection ritual in a deconsecrated church, daring the men to drink the blood mixed with his own. They refuse, and when Courtley collapses in agony after drinking it himself, the disgusted trio beat him to death and flee. His corpse doesn't stay dead — it transforms into Dracula, who vows to destroy the three men through their own children. He hypnotizes Hargood's daughter Alice into bludgeoning her father to death, then uses her to lure Paxton's daughter Lucy into his clutches and vampirizes her; Lucy stakes her own father and bites Secker's son Jeremy, who in turn kills Secker. The one child Dracula can't get to is Paxton's son Paul, who pieces the truth together, restores the church's ruined altar, and faces down Dracula and the still-hypnotized Alice. Spurned by Dracula, Alice breaks free of his hold and helps Paul trap the Count, who's overwhelmed by the reconsecrated church and crumbles to dust. Sasdy's entry turns Dracula into a weapon of generational punishment — sins of the fathers, paid for by the children the fathers never noticed were watching.
