PLOT
- Amenábar wrote and shot Tesis while still a student at Universidad Complutense de Madrid, filming much of it in August 1995 inside the university's real Facultad de Ciencias de la Información.
- The film swept seven Goya Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay — a stunning debut for a 23-year-old first-time director.
- Veteran director José Luis Cuerda, who first noticed Amenábar's talent after seeing his student short 'Himenóptero,' produced Tesis and even appears onscreen as 'Profesor 1º' — his backing was what got the film financed and made.
- Made on a budget of about 116 million pesetas (well under 700,000 euros), the film became a commercial and critical hit in Spain and launched Amenábar's international career.
- Amenábar, a self-taught composer, wrote the film's synthesizer-driven score himself, a practice he continued on several of his early features.
