TRIVIA
THEORIES
PLOT
  • Tsukamoto self-financed the film and shot it on 16mm black-and-white stock with a Canon Scoopic camera, starting production in September 1987 while personally handling directing, writing, editing, cinematography and effects.
  • Tsukamoto cast himself as the Metal Fetishist, the character whose transformation and accident kick off the salaryman's own metamorphosis.
  • Tomorowo Taguchi's scrap-metal costume — made from junkyard parts and electronics stuck on with double-sided tape — was so heavy that at times he couldn't get up from the makeup chair, and he said his skin felt like sandpaper by the end of a shooting day.
  • Many of the film's jerky, crawling transformation sequences were achieved with pixilation: an actor holds a pose for a single frame, moves forward, re-poses, and the camera itself is repositioned each time, giving the metal figures their agonized, stop-motion glide.
  • The film won the Best Film award at Rome's Fantafestival in 1989, a win that pushed it onto the international festival circuit and helped turn it into a word-of-mouth midnight-movie hit back in Japan.
  • Tsukamoto has named David Cronenberg's Videodrome and Ridley Scott's Blade Runner as the two key influences behind Tetsuo, calling himself "one of Cronenberg's disciples" — and Tetsuo would go on to influence Cronenberg's own later work in turn.
