The Abominable Dr. Phibes

• Phibes never speaks with his own voice on screen — the story explains his throat was destroyed in the crash, so he "talks" by plugging a cable into a jack in his neck that runs to a steampunk gramophone device. Vincent Price's mouth was sealed shut with collodion for these scenes, and his actual dialogue was recorded separately and post-dubbed over his silent, masked performance.
• Director Robert Fuest was a production designer on the British TV series The Avengers before he ever directed (he later helmed several Avengers episodes in the late 1960s) — that background shows in Phibes' extravagant Art Deco sets and clockwork gadgetry, which he had a hand in conceiving himself.
• Most of the film was shot at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire, built out on the studio's standing period sets; the exterior of Phibes' mansion is Immanuel College on Elstree Road.
• Terry-Thomas plays Dr. Longstreet, the doctor punished by the "Blood" plague — strapped down and drained completely, one of the film's most notoriously queasy kills.
• The film's Ten-Plagues murder structure, carried out by a theologian turned killer, is frequently cited by critics and horror historians as a forerunner to the sin-themed killings of Se7en (1995) and the rigged death-trap kills of the Saw franchise (2004-), though neither set of filmmakers has ever confirmed Phibes as a direct influence.

Vulnavia is a literal automaton or projection of Phibes' will, not a human accomplice. She never speaks, never visibly ages between the two films in any meaningful way, and materializes precisely when Phibes needs an extra hand. She's the last 'person' he built before he became the last person he built—a clockwork grief given a dress and a mission.

Phibes died in the original car crash and the entire film is his post-mortem revenge fantasy staged in a personalized hell. The Plagues-of-Egypt structure is theological punishment he inflicts on doctors he believes murdered his wife, but the escalating theatricality—brass bands that play themselves, doors that open to nowhere—reads like a dying brain assembling a set from fragments of his performing life.

The film marks each kill with a Hebrew letter tied to the real Ten Plagues of Exodus, but the ritual Phibes performs plays out like liturgy more than scripture. He's a theologian, not just a killer working down a list: the blood-draining of Longstreet functions like an inverted Eucharist, the freezing 'hail' plague like an inverted baptism. He's not just quoting the Old Testament — he's staging his own private sacrament of revenge, borrowing its structure while gutting its meaning.

Dr. Anton Phibes—organ virtuoso, theologian, and hideously scarred survivor of a car crash he blames on the surgical team that failed to save his wife Victoria—emerges from hiding to hunt down the nine-member team, staging each death as one of the Biblical Ten Plagues of Egypt: bee-sting "boils," a locust swarm, a snowbound freeze standing in for hail, and more. Assisted by his silent companion Vulnavia, Phibes dispatches his victims with clockwork, theatrical cruelty while Scotland Yard's Inspector Trout scrambles to decode the pattern. It builds to a climax where lead surgeon Dr. Vesalius must cut a device from his own son's chest within six minutes — the exact window Victoria had on the operating table — to save the boy from a slow drip of acid. With Vesalius distracted, Phibes drains his own blood, replaces it with embalming fluid, and seals himself into a sarcophagus beside Victoria as the room goes dark: the tenth and final plague, darkness, claimed for himself.
