Esteban's entire criminal adventure is a prolonged aura state — a seizure-induced fantasy where the passive taxidermist finally lives out his violent obsession. The ending's ambiguity supports this: nothing is resolved, only abandoned, as if the seizure simply ended and reality rushed back in.

Esteban and Dietrich — Diana's husband, the criminal he unwittingly kills — are mirror images. Dietrich is a career criminal hiding behind a quiet cabin life, while Esteban is a quiet taxidermist hiding a criminal fantasy life. When Esteban steps into Dietrich's place among the heist crew, it plays less like impersonation and more like he's completing a version of himself that was already dead.

The film is structured as a mirror of Nine Queens: where that film's con artist thrives in the chaos of the city, Esteban's 'perfect crime' unfolds in the uncontrollable wilderness. Bielinsky is arguing that control is always a delusion, and the best you can do is ride the aura until it breaks.

Esteban Espinosa is a withdrawn Buenos Aires taxidermist with epilepsy and a photographic memory, who obsessively imagines pulling off the perfect crime. After his marriage falls apart, he joins his acquaintance Sontag on a hunting trip in the forests of Argentine Patagonia. When Sontag storms off after an argument, Esteban is left alone — and during the hunt he accidentally shoots and kills a stranger, Dietrich, the husband of the cabin's owner Diana. Searching the dead man's cabin, Esteban finds detailed plans for an armored-truck heist, and when Dietrich's criminal partners come looking for their missing accomplice, Esteban lets them believe he's the man. His eidetic memory keeps the deception — and the heist — alive, but his epilepsy can strike without warning. The Aura, that eerie pre-seizure calm Esteban describes, becomes both his edge and his greatest liability.
