Jane Doe isn't a victim of the Salem-era witch panic—she IS the witch panic, a living archive of Puritan atrocity. The cloth-wrapped tooth, the Jimson weed lodged in her stomach, the bound limbs: she was tortured and buried alive by colonists who turned their own cruelty into a ritual. Every wound the coroners document is a wound she's already survived. She doesn't kill because she's evil; she kills because dissection is just the inquisition revisited by another name.

The film is structurally a story about the limits of empiricism. Tommy Tilden believes the body will confess its secrets if you cut it open carefully enough. Austin's death in the final moments isn't random punishment—it's the price of inherited complicity. Tommy offers himself as a sacrifice to stop the haunting, and it works, but Jane Doe takes Austin anyway because the son who watched, assisted, and never questioned his father's authority over the body is guilty by participation. The film's darkest reading: innocence isn't inherited, but neither is it a shield.

A father-son coroner team pulls a late shift when sheriff's deputies deliver an unidentifiable young woman found buried in the basement of a multiple-homicide scene. No visible cause of death, no ID, pristine skin over bones that show catastrophic trauma. As the autopsy progresses, the impossible contradictions pile up—burned lungs on an unscarred body, a cloth-wrapped tooth lodged in the stomach, a paralytic flower that only grows in one region of colonial New England. The corpse starts pushing back. The basement locks itself. The radio finds the dead. And Tommy Tilden realizes too late that some bodies don't want to be opened—they want to be found.
