The Baby

• Ted Post directed 56 episodes of Gunsmoke and four episodes of The Twilight Zone during his long TV career, but he initially turned down The Baby, calling the material "too negative." Screenwriter Abe Polsky spent roughly a year talking him into it before Post finally agreed to direct.
• Ruth Roman, who plays domineering matriarch Mrs. Wadsworth, had been a major Warner Bros. contract star in the early 1950s (she co-starred in Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train). By the time she signed on for The Baby, her leading-lady career had faded, and the role let her play sharply against her earlier glamorous image.
• David Mooney, billed onscreen as David Manzy, played Baby and spent most of the shoot crawling on the floor in a diaper. Born in 1941, he was actually in his early thirties during filming -- not a young actor, even though the character is written as a man in his twenties.
• The Baby was made on a shoestring budget of about $200,000 by the small outfit Quintet Productions and released to theaters in March 1973 by the independent distributor Scotia International -- not a major studio.
• The film largely disappeared from view for years before being rediscovered through Severin Films' 2011 Blu-ray/DVD release and Arrow Films' 2018 reissue, with a further boost from the show Red Letter Media's Best of the Worst, which helped cement its current cult reputation.

Baby's regression isn't simply abuse but a habit of learned helplessness he has some hold over -- the film keeps him nonverbal by design, so every moment he does act independently (helping Ann escape the basement, for instance) reads as a crack in the conditioning. The open question is whether that crack is genuine agency or just a shift from one caretaker's control to another's.

The film functions as a dark inversion of the 1970s social-work narrative: Ann appears to be rescuing Baby from the Wadsworths, but the reveal that she orchestrated his "rescue" to make him a permanent companion for her own infantilized husband -- killing the Wadsworth women in the process -- implies the system doesn't cure the pathology, it just hands it to a more competent predator.

The Wadsworth sisters represent competing responses to the family's pathology: one complies, one resists, and one is punished for trying to escape. Baby's condition is less about him than about what the women need him to be -- a permanent dependent who validates their control.

Ann Gentry, a social worker, is sent to investigate the Wadsworth family after reports of a neglected adult son. What she finds is Baby: a man in his twenties kept in a crib, diapered, forbidden to walk or speak, and punished with beatings and an electric cattle prod whenever he tries to break the pattern. His mother and two sisters insist his condition is a disability, but Ann becomes convinced it's abuse -- a lifetime of enforced infantilism. When the Wadsworths turn on her and try to silence her for good, Baby helps her escape, and she takes him home. The film's real twist lands after the rescue: Ann didn't take Baby to free him. She wanted a companion for her own husband, left with the mind of an infant after a car accident. When the Wadsworth women come after Baby, Ann kills them, and the story ends with Ann and her two "babies" playing together in a backyard pool built over the family's grave.
