TRIVIA
THEORIES
PLOT
  • The film loosely reworks Fredric Brown's 1949 novel 'The Screaming Mimi' -- Argento was first pointed to the book by Bernardo Bertolucci, who'd considered buying the film rights himself -- but Argento moved the setting from Chicago to Rome and changed the killer from an exotic dancer to an art dealer's wife.
  • It grossed roughly 1.4 billion lire in Italy, making it the 13th-highest-grossing film of the 1969-70 season and the film that launched giallo into international prominence.
  • Argento told BBC Culture the film's key innovation for the genre was adding real psychology and psychoanalysis to a giallo for the first time, giving the killer's motive a clinical backstory instead of leaving it as a mystery-box gimmick.
  • The film ran into censorship trouble abroad -- in the UK it was cut for its 1983 theatrical reissue and later got swept up in Britain's 1980s 'video nasty' panic before eventually reaching home video uncut.
  • Ennio Morricone scored the film -- his first work on a giallo and the first of five collaborations with Argento -- built around Edda Dell'Orso's wordless, whispering vocals, a sound that became a genre signature.
