The Blackcoat's Daughter

• Shot on location at the University of Guelph's Kemptville Campus in Kemptville, Ontario, during February 2015 — under the working title "February," which doubled as the shoot month.
• Kiernan Shipka was 15 years old during production (born November 1999), her wholesome Sabrina/Mad Men-era image doing a lot of the work against the film's slow-burn violence.
• The film premiered at TIFF on September 12, 2015, then sat with distributor A24 for about a year and a half before a February 2017 VOD release and a limited March 31, 2017 theatrical run.
• Writer-director Oz Perkins sent the script straight to Emma Roberts, who called back within a day saying "I'm obsessed and I can't sleep and I have to do this" — she then recommended Kiernan Shipka for the role of Kat.
• A24 pushed back on the generic title "February," so Perkins renamed it The Blackcoat's Daughter, lifting the phrase from the film's creepy nursery rhyme: "Beetle beetle, blackcoat's daughter, what was in the holy water?"
• The score is by Elvis Perkins — Oz's younger brother and a folk musician (Elvis Perkins in Dearland) — his first-ever film score, built on guitar, violin, bass, hurdy-gurdy and hammered dulcimer instead of synths.

The two girls are the same person at different points in a fractured timeline — Kat isn't just crossing paths with Joan; she's witnessing her own future self arriving to collect her. The film's structure hides a loop, not a parallel narrative.

The demon isn't possessing Kat so much as it's grooming her — the boiler, the slow build, the way she apologizes to her victims. The entity chose her precisely because she was already broken enough to let it in, making the 'possession' closer to a seduction than an invasion.

Joan's nine years of institutional silence weren't recovery — they were incubation. When she finally reaches the school, she's not returning to the scene of the crime; she's returning to the entity that made her, which has been waiting in the dark for its daughter to come home.
