The Blob

• The film was a box-office bomb: made on a budget of roughly $10 million, it grossed just $8.2 million domestically — nowhere close to covering costs once marketing and distribution are factored in.
• Makeup effects supervisor Tony Gardner (fresh off Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' and 'Harry and the Hendersons') led a team of 33 artists for seven months to pull off the film's 41 effects shots. The Blob itself was built from silk bags filled with methyl cellulose — a food thickening agent — which the crew nicknamed the 'Blob Quilt.'
• Shawnee Smith and Kevin Dillon weren't the first choices for Meg and Brian — Teri Hatcher and Richard Grieco were both in the running for the lead roles before the parts went to Smith and Dillon.
• The film was banned outright in Finland from 1988 until 2001, when the country abolished its 'KK' (completely forbidden) film classification and the uncut version was finally released there.
• Kevin Dillon's rebel biker Brian Flagg — leather jacket, Triumph Tiger motorcycle, tough-guy sneer — was styled as a deliberate throwback to 1950s greaser iconography, tying the late-80s remake back to the original 1958 film's era.

The Blob is a bioweapon, not an alien organism. The government team arrives suspiciously fast with containment protocols already in place, and the lead scientist's line about it being 'a virus from space' reads as deliberate disinformation. The meteor was a delivery system—either a test gone wrong or an accidental release the feds were already tracking.

The preacher who survives the theater attack and preserves a Blob fragment in a jar represents the film's real monster: faith weaponized. He doesn't destroy it, he keeps it. The Blob is his congregation's apocalypse made flesh, and he's patient enough to wait decades for it to fulfill scripture.

Arborville is already dead before the Blob arrives. The downtown is crumbling, the economy is flat, and the biggest local event is a football game. The Blob is the town's entropy made visible—a literal manifestation of slow, consuming decay that was already eating Arborville from the inside.

A meteor crashes outside Arborville, and an old drifter who pokes around it ends up with a handful of goo. Bad move. A gelatinous organism starts absorbing people whole, growing bigger with every meal — including the cheerleader's football-star date, who's gone before intermission. A rebel biker with a bad reputation and the cheerleader everyone underestimates end up the only two willing to fight back, and they figure out the thing hates cold. Meanwhile, a shadowy government biohazard crew rolls in — not to help, but to contain a weapon of their own making. Bodies dissolve. The town square becomes a slaughterhouse. Our heroes freeze it and blow it into crystallized pieces — but a preacher pockets one glittering shard in a jar, convinced it's a sign from God, and he's out there right now waiting for round two.
