The Blood Spattered Bride

• Based on Sheridan Le Fanu's 1872 novella "Carmilla" — the same source that gave Hammer's "The Vampire Lovers" (1970) its plot and fed loosely into Carl Dreyer's "Vampyr" (1932).
• Alexandra Bastedo, who plays the centuries-old vampire, was already a familiar face from the 1960s British spy series "The Champions" — real name recognition for what was otherwise a fringe Spanish production.
• Made in the final years of Franco's dictatorship, when homosexuality was still criminalized in Spain, director Vicente Aranda cut two versions of the film — a tamer domestic release and a fuller international cut — to get its lesbian content and anti-authoritarian subtext past state censors.
• It's grouped with "The Vampire Lovers," "Vampyros Lesbos," "Daughters of Darkness," and "The Velvet Vampire" as one of the defining titles of the early-1970s lesbian-vampire cycle that swept European horror.

Mircalla is not a literal vampire but Susan's dissociative projection, a fractured self born from marital abuse and gaslighting. The 'bite' marks appear only after Susan loses consciousness, and Mircalla vanishes whenever the husband is present, suggesting she exists solely as Susan's psychological escape mechanism.

The husband is the real monster, and the vampire framing is deliberate misdirection by Aranda. Every supernatural event is preceded by him drugging, restraining, or isolating Susan. The film dares you to keep calling it a horror plot when what's on screen is domestic abuse with gothic furniture.

The buried woman on the beach is not an artifact of the past but a premonition Susan generates, a warning from her own future self. The film's chronology fractures once she's dug up, and every subsequent scene plays like Susan remembering what will happen rather than experiencing it for the first time.

Newlywed Susan arrives at her husband's sprawling estate for a honeymoon that turns controlling almost immediately — he's cold, then cruel, and the house is lined with portraits of his male ancestors and not a single one of their wives. Down on the beach, he digs a living woman out of the sand, breathing through a snorkel; she calls herself Carmila, and she's actually Mircalla Karnstein, an ancestor who murdered her own husband on their wedding night centuries back. Carmila seduces Susan and feeds off her, and Susan's buried rage starts surfacing right alongside her. What plays like a possession story is really Susan finally naming what's been done to her. It ends in blood: the husband kills both women while they rest in their coffins, then shoots a bitten servant girl who begs him to finish it — and the film closes on a newspaper headline about a man who cut the hearts out of three women, leaving it deliberately unclear how much of any of it was ever supernatural.
