The Body Snatcher

• This was the eighth and final on-screen pairing of horror icons Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi; Lugosi's role as the blackmailing assistant Joseph was a small, drastically reduced part compared to their earlier co-starring films.
• The screenplay adapts Robert Louis Stevenson's 1884 short story of the same name, itself inspired by the real 1828 Burke and Hare murders in Edinburgh, where two men sold victims' bodies to an anatomy school; the film even name-checks Burke, Hare, and Dr. Knox directly.
• Producer Val Lewton rewrote screenwriter Philip MacDonald's script so extensively that MacDonald insisted Lewton share credit. Lewton took it under his longtime pen name 'Carlos Keith' — one of only two of his RKO pictures (the other being Bedlam) where he accepted an on-screen writing credit.

• For the film's St. Louis premiere on February 14, 1945, RKO's publicity department parked a horse-drawn hearse loaded with dummy cadavers outside the theater as a promotional stunt.

Gray doesn't just blackmail MacFarlane — he is MacFarlane's guilt made flesh. The cabman knows about the old crime because he represents the part of MacFarlane that never stopped killing. His final 'resurrection' in the carriage reads less as a ghost story than as MacFarlane's conscience physically dragging him into the grave.

The crippled girl Georgina exists as the film's moral fulcrum: she is proof that MacFarlane's surgical skill could heal rather than harvest, and her presence exposes that every body Gray delivers is a choice MacFarlane keeps making. Her arc isn't sentiment — it's indictment.

The student Donald Fettes isn't the protagonist so much as the witness the audience needs. The film traps him inside a mentorship structure that mirrors Gray's hold over MacFarlane, suggesting the cycle of compromise is generational and will keep reproducing itself unless someone walks away from the operating table entirely.

Producer Val Lewton's third RKO horror picture trades supernatural frights for the rot underneath medical respectability, and Robert Wise stages it all in fog-thick streets and operating theaters where ethics die first.
