PLOT
  • Director Ho Meng Hua was one of Shaw Brothers' most prolific filmmakers, directing roughly fifty films for the studio between 1958 and 1980; he specialized in budget-conscious FX extravaganzas, later helming Black Magic and Infra-Man.
  • The story is a loose remake of the Orang Minyak ("Oily Man") legend, a Malay folklore figure that fueled a wave of competing 1958 films -- including P. Ramlee's Sumpah Orang Minyak -- after reports of an oil-covered assailant first surfaced in a Singapore newspaper in 1957.
  • Star Danny Lee plays Sheng Yung, a young law-firm employee crippled by childhood polio who walks with crutches -- the oil spell is the first time in his life he's had real physical power.
  • Critics have long mocked the monster's practical costume as cheap rather than menacing, describing it as looking like "a guy in a rubber suit" or "a piece of oily flubber" rather than a convincing creature.
  • The film stayed largely stuck on Hong Kong home video for decades until 88 Films gave it its Blu-ray debut in the UK in 2017 (Region B, 88 Asia Collection #9); a sharper 2K restoration later appeared on Arrow's Shawscope Vol. 4 boxset.
