• Cronenberg wrote the screenplay amid his own bitter divorce from Margaret Hindson and a custody battle over their daughter — he's said the same year's Kramer vs. Kramer irritated him with how neatly it resolved divorce, and this film was his answer.

The brood children are not supernatural creations but the inevitable product of generational trauma—Nola's abuse at her parents' hands literally spawns new bodies to carry that violence forward. Cronenberg stages this with the children attacking in pack formation, suggesting abuse replicates itself through new vessels.

Raglan is the film's true villain, not Nola. His psychoplasmics exploits vulnerable patients as research subjects, and his refusal to shut down the program despite clear evidence of danger makes him culpable for every death. The final scene where he enters Nola's room reads as a scientist returning to his experiment, not a doctor helping a patient.

The film's Canadian winter setting functions as emotional cryogenics—everything frozen, preserved, waiting to erupt. The brood attacks happen in snow, at lakeside cabins, in cold clinical spaces. Cronenberg stages violence against warmth's absence, suggesting these families were dead long before the murders began.

Cronenberg weaponizes divorce. Frank Carveth fights for his daughter's safety while his estranged wife Nola undergoes experimental psychotherapy at Dr. Hal Raglan's institute, where rage physically manifests as childlike mutants. These brood spawn execute Nola's unspoken fury—murdering her mother, a teacher, anyone who threatens her custody claim. Raglan's 'psychoplasmics' turns repressed trauma into literal flesh. When Frank discovers the children are born from a growth on Nola's abdomen, the custody battle becomes a body-horror siege. Cronenberg's most autobiographical nightmare: he wrote it during his own divorce, and the rage is genuine.
