• Tom Savini turned down a return to Friday the 13th Part 2 to work on The Burning instead — he found the idea of Jason as the killer illogical after helping build the first film's mythology, where the mother was the murderer.
• The raft massacre, where Cropsy kills five teenagers in a burst of rapid-fire quick cuts, ran into serious UK censor trouble: the BBFC trimmed both the raft attack and the opening scissor murder for a cinema X certificate, and an uncut video release briefly got the film swept up in the 'video nasties' obscenity panic.
• It was shot in the summer of 1980 at Camp Stonehaven in Ransomville, New York, with additional scenes filmed at Camp Scouthaven in Freedom, New York.
• Jason Alexander, 21 years old at the time, and Fisher Stevens both made their feature film debuts here, years before Seinfeld made Alexander a household name.
• The Burning was the debut production for Harvey and Bob Weinstein, built around a Cropsey campfire legend Harvey heard as a kid at camp in upstate New York. Their production company took its name, Miramax, from their parents Miriam and Max, who helped bankroll the roughly $1.5 million budget.
• The film only grossed around $700,000 during its brief U.S. theatrical run against that $1.5 million budget, but performed much better overseas, including a strong run in Japan where it pulled in over a million dollars in its first two weeks.

The river functions as a boundary between civilization and the repressed. Every kill happens once the campers leave the structured campgrounds and enter the wilderness waterway—Cropsy doesn't hunt the camp, he hunts the transition. The river is where rules dissolve.

Cropsy's shears are deliberately phallic in a way the genre usually avoids. He doesn't stab or slash; he spreads and cuts open. Read against the opening prank—a group of boys trying to frighten an adult male in his sleep—the killings become a distorted revenge fantasy about emasculation, not just disfigurement.

The film's structure mirrors a trauma cycle: the opening prank creates Cropsy, and the final confrontation repeats the original fire. Todd's character is the only one who understands this, because he's the only camper who witnessed the aftermath. Survival isn't escape—it's recognition that the pattern will keep burning.

A prank at Camp Blackfoot goes catastrophically wrong, leaving the groundskeeper a charred ruin shuffling through a hospital ward. Years later, Cropsey resurfaces—not with a pitchfork but with garden shears, the kind that split a skull like ripe fruit. He stalks a fresh batch of campers along a river, turning a canoe trip into a floating abattoir. Maylam stages the mayhem with a slasher's patience, but the infamous raft sequence is where the film earns its reputation: five kills in under thirty seconds, Tom Savini's prosthetics doing the screaming before anyone can draw breath. The woods don't care who survives.
