The Car

• The car was a heavily modified 1971 Lincoln Continental Mark III, customized by Hollywood car builder George Barris — lowered roof, widened fenders, and windows tinted smoked-on-the-inside/amber-on-the-outside so nothing could see in. Barris built four cars for the production; two were destroyed during filming, including the one in the house-crash stunt.
• The fictional town of Santa Ynez is supposed to be in Utah, not Arizona — the production filmed extensively around St. George, Kanab, Snow Canyon, and the Zion–Mount Carmel Tunnel, with additional canyon footage shot at Red Rock Canyon State Park in California.
• The film pulled in roughly $12 million at the North American box office for Universal — a solid return for a B-picture that opened the same summer Star Wars was eating every other release alive.
• The car crashing through Lauren's house was shot for real, with the vehicle driven through a breakaway facade on a built set — no opticals, no CGI, because none of that existed yet for a film like this in 1977.
• Critics leaned hard on the comparison to Spielberg's Duel when the film came out, several calling it a 'poor man's Duel' for the unseen-killer-behind-the-wheel setup; other reviewers framed it instead as Duel crossed with Jaws, chasing the same monster-movie money both of those films made for Universal.

The car's refusal to enter the cemetery isn't just a demon facing holy ground — read it as the vehicle being a literal manifestation of road death itself, a grim reaper for the highway age. It only kills people who are traveling or who stand in the path of its route: the cyclists, the hitchhiker, Lauren dying in her own home when the car comes through the wall. The car is America's automotive death toll given a single chassis.

The film plays like a western wearing horror's skin. Sheriff Peck and Wade Parent are the lawman and the young gun, the canyon ambush is a cattle-drive trap repurposed, and the car fills the role of the unstoppable outlaw who rides into town and can't be reasoned with. The dynamite blast in the quarry is the modern cavalry charge coming over the ridge.

The car never enters hallowed ground, but it also never speaks, never reveals a driver, and never explains itself. Read it as a test of faith: the town's residents die because they rely on secular authority — police, roadblocks, dynamite — while the only force that reliably repels the car is the oldest one in the book. The supernatural is real. The law is not.

Something rolls into Santa Ynez, Utah — black sedan, no plates, no driver, no mercy. It runs down two cyclists on a canyon road like they're speed bumps, then graduates to hunting the locals, killing Sheriff Everett Peck in the open street and leaving Chief Deputy Wade Parent to take over. Wade watches the body count climb and realizes conventional law enforcement means nothing against a machine that survives rammings, rolls itself upright, and refuses to enter consecrated ground. The car is a predator with a route. When it drives straight through the house of Wade's girlfriend Lauren and kills her, the deputy turns the town into bait. One canyon quarry, one stash of dynamite, one shot at burying this thing where it can't dig out.
