• The killer-kid premise started as a story by Paul Andrew Williams, who left the project to direct his own film (The Cottage). Tom Shankland took over, writing the screenplay himself through roughly 100 drafts before directing it.
• Practical effects man Paul Hyett (prosthetics, blood, a life-size child dummy for the rough stuff) handled the gore almost entirely in-camera, including the sled scene where Nicky leaves a garden rake in Robbie's path and it splits his skull open in the snow.
• The film premiered at FrightFest in London in August 2008 before Vertigo Films gave it a UK theatrical release that December.
• It was a box-office non-event: opened at number 10 with just over £98,000 from 132 cinemas and finished its UK run around £200,000 total — the cult reputation came later, on home video.
• Director Tom Shankland picked up a Special Mention at the 2009 Fantasia International Film Festival specifically for how he directed the young cast.

The virus doesn't just make kids violent, it strips away the learned behaviors of childhood, returning them to a pre-civilized survival state. The film's horror stems from how thin that conditioning actually is.

The adults' deaths are deliberately karmic: each parent is killed by their own specific failure or weakness. The sled, the complacency, the denial. The pathogen isn't random, it's punitive, punishing parental inattention with maximum irony.

Leah's survival at the end isn't because she's immune. She's simply too young to execute the violence the older children display. The implication: given another year, she'd be just like them. The cycle is only delayed.

A New Year's family gathering in the English countryside goes sideways when the kids start acting off. Not possessed, not zombie-fied, just wrong. Shankland weaponizes every parental instinct against itself: the hesitation before striking your own child is exactly what gets you killed.
