The Church

• Michele Soavi's second feature as director (after 1987's Stage Fright), produced by Dario Argento, who co-wrote the screenplay with Soavi and Franco Ferrini.

The cathedral is not merely built over evil—it is the evil, a structure designed by the crusader-era architect as a permanent engine of containment that requires periodic sacrifice. The automated locking system suggests the building was always intended to function as a trap, making every congregation a standing reserve for whatever waits beneath.

The school group's presence is not incidental. The film's recurring imagery of children in sacred spaces positions innocence as fuel for the crypt's hunger, and the final shot implies the cycle of sealing and releasing is generational, with each era providing new bait.

The church's own centuries of sanctification are what keep the evil bound rather than release it—every rite performed on that ground unknowingly renews the seal, meaning institutional religion created (and unwittingly maintains) the prison it can never fully escape.

A cathedral built over a mass grave of executed devil-worshippers conceals a sealed crypt beneath its foundation. When a librarian cracks the seal, the church's automated doors lock shut, trapping everyone inside—parishioners, staff, a school group, and a young couple seeking refuge from rain. The dead rise, hallucinations rot through reality, and the building itself becomes a living trap engineered centuries ago by a crusader who slaughtered heretics to contain their evil. Soavi's architecture-as-prison concept turns consecrated ground into an infernal machine, with salvation structurally impossible.
