Patricia Jessel's dual role as both the innkeeper Mrs. Newless and the burned witch Selwyn isn't merely economical casting—it suggests Selwyn never actually died. The burning was theater, and the 'curse' was simply a cover story letting her rule Whitewood openly for centuries while everyone assumed she was history.

Nan Barlow arrives in Whitewood, Massachusetts, researching witchcraft for a college paper. Her professor, Alan Driscoll, recommends the town—conveniently omitting that he's steering her toward a sacrificial altar. The innkeeper gives Nan a room with a creepy warning about staying put at night. She doesn't. Centuries after Elizabeth Selwyn burned at the stake and cursed the colony, Whitewood still runs on blood debt. Nan becomes the latest offering. Her brother and boyfriend arrive looking for answers and find a town where the dead don't bother staying dead.
