PLOT
  • Production began October 12, 1959 at Shepperton Studios on a budget of just £45,000 — not dollars, and a shoestring even by 1959 British B-picture standards.
  • The film is credited on paper to Vulcan Productions, but it's now regarded as the real first team-up of producers Milton Subotsky and Max Rosenberg — the partnership that became Amicus Productions two years later.
  • Subotsky rewrote the script himself to lengthen it, adding the subplot where Nan's boyfriend and brother go looking for her after she goes missing.
  • It flopped in Britain on its September 1960 release — a small profit on paper, but a commercial disappointment that took decades to earn its cult reputation.
  • American audiences didn't see it until September 12, 1962, when Trans-Lux released it in Los Angeles as 'Horror Hotel' — a cut trimmed by roughly two minutes, losing part of Elizabeth Selwyn's curse speech and some of the Driscoll/Nan witchcraft debate.
