THEORIES
PLOT
- Ha Jung-woo plays the grieving father, Sang-won — not the mysterious exorcist figure, as it's easy to assume. That role, Kyung-hoon, a man who's spent a decade tracking children who vanished into the same kind of closet, belongs to Kim Nam-gil.
- The missing child at the center of the story is Sang-won's young daughter, Yi-na (played by Heo Yool) — not a son.
- The Closet marked writer-director Kim Kwang-bin's feature debut after years of short films, including 2016's "How to Pick a Lock," which won Best Korean Short Film at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN).
- Ha Jung-woo wasn't just the lead — he was also one of the film's producers, alongside Yoon Jong-bin (director of The Spy Gone North). Ha's star power from Along with the Gods and The Handmaiden gave a low-key ghost story real commercial visibility in Korea.
- The Closet opened in South Korean theaters on February 5, 2020, grossing roughly $9.2 million domestically — just weeks before the Daegu COVID-19 outbreak upended the country's box office that spring.
