TRIVIA
THEORIES
PLOT
  • The film went out under different names depending on the market — Behind the Shutters in the US (1976) and Sisters of Corruption in the UK — and didn't open in New York under its original title until November 30, 1979, three months after star Jean Seberg's death.
  • It was shot entirely on location in Comillas, a small coastal town in Cantabria, Spain.
  • Producer Xavier Armet's Anabel Films built the picture around imported star power: American actress Jean Seberg played the stepmother opposite Spanish former child star Marisol, who took the role of Chris in part to break from her wholesome teen-idol image.
  • Director Juan Antonio Bardem was already one of Spain's most acclaimed filmmakers for socially critical dramas like Death of a Cyclist (1955), which Franco-era censors forced him to alter — Chris Miller was a rare detour into horror-adjacent genre territory for him.
  • Vinegar Syndrome's later restoration, sourced from the original 35mm camera negative, preserved an alternate Spanish-market ending that plays differently than the English-language cut.
