The Crazies

• Shot in and around Evans City and neighboring Zelienople, Pennsylvania—Romero's usual stomping grounds, also used for Night of the Living Dead. Many local residents appear as extras, and some real high-school students played the white-suited soldiers herding the town's uninfected into the local high school, which doubles as the film's quarantine center.
• Made on a lean budget of roughly $270,000 and was Romero's first union production.
• Cinematographer S. William "Bill" Hinzman—the shambling graveyard zombie from Night of the Living Dead—also appears on-screen in The Crazies' opening scene as the deranged father who kills his wife and torches the house. Romero, as he did on NOTLD, edited the film himself.
• Flopped in its initial, scattershot theatrical release—the distributor even released it under different titles (including Code Name: Trixie) in different markets trying to find an audience—but it earned its budget back through strong drive-in word of mouth and later grew into one of Romero's most reappraised films.
• Character actor Richard France steals scenes as Dr. Watts, the frantic government scientist who actually cracks a cure in the final act—only to be killed by a stampede of infected townspeople before he can deliver it, destroying the only existing samples.

Trixie doesn't actually cause violence—it strips away social conditioning and exposes what was already there. The townspeople's murderous impulses were latent, and the bioweapon is less a plague than a truth serum for American rot. Romero's militia and civilian mobs are indistinguishable because the disease is just accelerating the same authoritarian reflex.

The film is a direct Vietnam allegory where Trixie stands in for a chemical-warfare program that poisons its own population, covered up by the same government that deployed it. The soldiers' confusion and brutality mirror draftees dropped into a war zone they don't understand, shooting civilians because command can't tell them who the enemy is.

Dr. Watts is the real protagonist who never realizes it. The film keeps cutting between David's escape attempt and Watts penned up in a makeshift school lab under armed guard, and the structure argues that institutional knowledge is the actual casualty. Watts solves the problem and nobody listens, while David runs and gets nowhere. The scientist getting cut down on the stairs right as he cracks the cure isn't tragic irony—it's the thesis.

The Pentagon quarantines the county with ruthless incompetence, gunning down civilians and herding the uninfected into the local high school while soldiers in hazmat suits stumble through the chaos. A Vietnam-vet volunteer fireman and his pregnant nurse girlfriend try to slip the cordon before the disease catches them or the soldiers do. Romero shoots it like a nightmare broadcast from a country at war with itself, and nobody wins.
