The Curse of Frankenstein

• Hammer made the film on a shoestring budget of roughly £65,000 and it grossed more than $7 million in the US alone — over 70 times its cost — the sleeper hit that revived the near-broke studio and launched the entire "Hammer Horror" Gothic cycle (Dracula, The Mummy, and beyond).
• It was Hammer's first color horror film and the first color adaptation of Mary Shelley's story — the studio leaned all the way in with "Kensington Gore," the thick fake-blood formula that became a genre signature.
• To get its X certificate from the BBFC, the film had to trim shots of severed hands, the creature's bloodied face, and an eyeball viewed through a magnifying glass; the eyeball shot survived (trimmed) in UK theatrical and TV prints but was cut entirely from US prints.
• Universal threatened legal action if Hammer's creature resembled Jack Pierce's copyrighted Karloff makeup, so Hammer artist Phil Leakey built the Creature's look from scratch — a deliberately more grotesque, scarred design with nothing borrowed from Universal's.
• Christopher Lee was cast as the Creature partly for his 6'5" height, but he wasn't the tallest option on the table — Hammer had also considered the even taller (6'7") Bernard Bresslaw for the role.

Victor's Creature is less a being than a projection — every murder it commits maps to someone Victor wanted dead anyway. The blind man who wandered too close, the mistress who became inconvenient: the Creature is Victor's id with stitches, acting out in public what the Baron already does in private, like shoving his own mentor off a balcony for a fresher brain.

The film's real experiment isn't reanimating tissue but testing whether class privilege can survive absolute moral bankruptcy. Victor confesses everything to anyone who'll listen, yet the priest, the jailer, and his own fiancée treat him as a madman rather than a murderer. The system built to protect a Baron is what condemns him — because nobody believes a gentleman could also be a butcher.

Paul Krempe isn't the moral counterweight he pretends to be. He watched Victor dig up bodies and said nothing, then positioned himself as the reluctant conscience only once Victor's work threatened Paul's own comfort. His refusal to testify in court isn't principle — it's a collaborator covering his tracks.

Baron Victor Frankenstein inherits a fortune and a God complex, spending both on assembling a patchwork corpse he shocks into twitching, murderous life. But the real monster is Victor himself — a blue-blooded sociopath who shoves his own mentor off a balcony to steal his brain, then buries the evidence without blinking. When his stitched-together brute turns lethal, Victor's answer isn't to destroy it but to eliminate the witnesses — including Justine, the servant girl he's been sleeping with, who turns up pregnant and threatens to expose him unless he marries her. He locks her in a room with the Creature instead. All the while he's engaged to his cousin Elizabeth, but the wedding never happens — the Creature crashes it, and Victor's own shot meant for the monster wounds her instead. By the time he's marched to the guillotine, nobody believes his creature ever existed. The monster dissolves in a vat of acid. The Baron dies for it.
