• Shot on a $10 million budget (raised by producer Dino De Laurentiis), filming took place in Ontario's Niagara region during a brutal deep freeze, with Niagara-on-the-Lake standing in for the story's fictional town of Cleaves Mills. The crew built a 20-foot New England-style gazebo for the town square and donated it to Niagara-on-the-Lake after wrapping.
• Christopher Walken wasn't Cronenberg's first pick for Johnny Smith. Stephen King himself originally pushed for Bill Murray, and Cronenberg's own early preference was actor Nicholas Campbell — who ended up cast instead as Frank Dodd, the film's Castle Rock serial killer.
• This is one of only three Cronenberg films not scored by his regular composer Howard Shore. Paramount insisted on a more mainstream name, so Michael Kamen — fresh off scoring Venom for the studio — wrote the music instead, recorded with the National Philharmonic Orchestra at Abbey Road.

• Martin Sheen said he didn't have to stretch far to find Greg Stillson, pointing to real-world politicians who'd 'given us second thoughts' about how far ambition and charisma can carry a dangerous man. Stephen King has separately called Stillson 'a boogeyman of mine.'

Johnny's psychic visions aren't glimpses of a fixed future but self-fulfilling prophecies—his intervention in the Frank Dodd murder case and his assassination attempt on Stillson both create the outcomes he fears. The film's structure suggests precognition itself is the trap, not the visions.

The coma isn't just medical trauma but a liminal death state; Johnny returns fundamentally alienated from the living, which is why his touch bridges to futures rather than presents. His relationship with Sarah becomes impossible not because of circumstance but because he's no longer fully human.

Stillson and Johnny are mirror images—men who believe they alone can see catastrophe coming and feel justified in extreme action. The film's moral question isn't whether Johnny should kill Stillson but whether Stillson's own messianic certainty is just Johnny's burden turned inside out.

A handshake with a populist Senate candidate named Greg Stillson reveals a nuclear apocalypse, and Johnny faces the classic awful arithmetic—kill one man to save millions, or let the future hold. Cronenberg strips King's novel to a cold moral equation about precognition as curse, not gift. The film's real horror isn't what Johnny sees coming. It's that nobody believes him until it's almost too late.
