TRIVIA
THEORIES
PLOT
- The film dramatizes the real 1984 wreck of the trawler Hellisey (renamed Breki onscreen) off Iceland's Westman Islands. Fisherman Gudlaugur 'Gulli' Fridthorsson swam roughly six kilometers through 5°C (41°F) water for five to six hours to reach shore — a survival researchers from the University of Iceland studied extensively afterward.
- Kormakur shot the wreck and swimming sequences in real North Atlantic water rather than a controlled tank, and sank an actual trawler for the capsizing scenes, saying a studio tank would have looked fake to Icelandic audiences who know their own ocean.
- Post-rescue MRIs found Gulli's subcutaneous body fat was several times thicker and denser than an average man's — closer to a seal's blubber than human fat — which researchers credited as a major reason he stayed warm long enough to survive.
- The real Guojaugur Fridthorsson had little direct involvement while Kormakur developed the film — the director has said he never spoke with him during that process — but a 1984 television interview recorded with Gulli the day after the wreck plays over the closing credits, ending on his own understated line: 'Of course, I'm nothing but a drop in the ocean.'
- Iceland selected The Deep as its official submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards (the 2013 ceremony); it made the January shortlist but was not nominated.
