PLOT
- Roger Corman executive produced through American International Pictures. Director Daniel Haller had spent the 1960s as Corman's go-to production designer on the Poe cycle (House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Raven, The Masque of the Red Death) before moving into the director's chair — this was not his directorial debut, since he'd already helmed Die, Monster, Die! and other AIP pictures for Corman earlier in the decade.
- Sandra Dee was cast as Nancy in April 1969 for $65,000 plus 5% of profits, taking her first adult role as a deliberate break from her squeaky-clean 'Tammy'/Gidget-era image after her Universal contract lapsed.
- The screenplay was co-written by a young Curtis Hanson — decades before he'd direct L.A. Confidential. It keeps Lovecraft's entity Yog-Sothoth by name, along with the Necronomicon and the Old Ones, even while bending the story toward a more conventional witchcraft-movie plot.
- To film Sandra Dee's nude ritual scene privately, the production used two soundstages — one for the actual shot, the other to hold cast and crew not needed in it.
- The film's original 1970 U.S. release was trimmed of nudity and rated 'M' (mature audiences), later revised to 'GP'; the R rating sometimes cited today applies only to modern uncut home-video prints.
