The Empty Man

• Approved on a $16 million budget (about $11 million actually spent on the shoot), the film was largely shot in South Africa in late 2016 with a final week of production in Illinois in September 2017. Disney's acquisition of Fox left it shelved for nearly three years before 20th Century Studios dumped it into pandemic-era theaters in October 2020 with almost no marketing — the trailer dropped just a week before release.
• The 22-minute Bhutan-set prologue wasn't shot in Bhutan at all — it was filmed in Cape Town, South Africa, standing in for the Himalayas, with the production working to cast local actors as Bhutanese monks.
• Before The Empty Man (his feature directorial debut), David Prior spent over a decade directing David Fincher's DVD/Blu-ray bonus features and behind-the-scenes documentaries, including work on Zodiac and The Social Network, plus one Lovecraftian-tinged short film, AM1200 (2008). Producer Ross Richie, co-founder of BOOM! Studios (which published the original graphic novel), championed Prior for the job despite his lack of feature narrative credits.
• The movie diverges heavily from Cullen Bunn and Vanesa R. Del Rey's source graphic novel, which centered on a disease-worshipping cult rather than the film's cosmic-horror/tulpa storyline — Prior kept the name, the cult, and the creature design but built a largely original narrative around them.
• It opened to just $1.3 million domestically and was mostly dismissed by critics on release, but built a cult following after hitting VOD — outlets like The Ringer later named it one of the best horror films of that year.
• The film's 137-minute runtime is built around that long cold-open prologue, which tells what looks like an entirely different story before folding into the main plot — a structural choice critics point to as part of why it read as a genre-hopping bait-and-switch on first release.

The Empty Man operates as a genuine meme, not a metaphor. The film takes the concept of an idea that self-replicates through human hosts literally—the bridge ritual, the whispered legend, even this film itself functions as a transmission vector. Anyone who watches it has already performed the ritual.

The Bhutan prologue isn't a prologue at all—it's the ending. Paul's encounter with the entity in the cave is what eventually births the entire Missouri cult decades later. The film is circular, not linear, and James is walking through a timeline that has already collapsed.

Ex-cop James Lasombra crawls into a small Missouri town chasing a missing girl and walks straight into something that doesn't want him to leave. A local legend about an empty-husk deity spreads through teenagers like a virus—find a bottle on an empty bridge, blow into it, and he comes for you in three days.
