The Entity

• The film is based on Frank De Felitta's 1978 novel, itself inspired by the real 1974 case of Doris Bither in Culver City, California — she reported being violently assaulted by an invisible presence in her home, a case investigated for weeks by UCLA parapsychologist Barry Taff.
• Stan Winston and effects artist James Kagel built the practical rigs for the assault scenes, including a latex dummy body wired with internal suction cups so the crew could simulate unseen fingers pressing into flesh — the dummy alone reportedly cost $65,000 to build.
• David Labiosa, who played Carla's teenage son, really broke his wrist filming a scene where his character gets thrown while trying to protect her — an eerie echo of the real Doris Bither case, where her actual son broke his arm in a nearly identical moment.
• Cinematographer Stephen H. Burum shot the film with extreme canted 'Dutch' angles and heavy use of the split-diopter lens, keeping both foreground and background in sharp, disorienting focus so the camera itself feels like an unseen presence in the room.

The Entity is a manifestation of repressed trauma from Carla's past abuse, and the parapsychologists succeed only because their framework lets her externalize and fight the violence she'd been carrying internally. The final scene at the supposed 'entity' house is her confronting the origin point, not a literal ghost.

The film is structured as a critique of institutional gaslighting—every authority figure, from psychiatrists to the boyfriend, reframes Carla's experience through their own lens. The entity thrives on disbelief. The more people tell her it isn't real, the stronger and more physical the attacks become.

The liquid-helium trap sequence in the third act is a deliberate tonal shift meant to mirror how trauma treatment can itself become re-traumatizing—strapping Carla into a lab, wiring her up, and essentially baiting the predator back to her body in the name of 'science' that benefits the researchers more than the patient.
