The Eye

• The film was remade in 2008 by Lionsgate as The Eye starring Jessica Alba, with the setting relocated from Hong Kong and Thailand to Los Angeles, with a climactic sequence in Mexico.
• Shooting spanned Hong Kong, used for the urban and hospital scenes, and northern Thailand, used for the donor family's rural backstory (not Bangkok, as sometimes misreported).

The ghosts Mun sees aren't haunting her, they're haunting the corneas. The donor, a young woman named Ling who could see death coming, essentially downloaded her psychic trauma into her tissue. Mun's visions aren't a gift or a curse, they're an organ rejection playing out on a spiritual plane, her body fighting a dead girl's psychic immune response.

The shadowy figure who escorts the dead is visible to Mun only after surgery, but Ling saw him her entire life. The implication is that this entity isn't tied to the eyes at all; it's always present. The transplant just lowered Mun's perceptual threshold enough to perceive it. The horror isn't that she gained a supernatural ability, it's that the barrier was removed and now she can't unsee what was always there.

Mun's blindness since age five means her visual memory framework is thin and unreliable once sight returns. The ghosts may be real, but her reaction to them, the inability to distinguish living from dead, the terror at basic visual phenomena, is a sensory crisis dressed up as a haunting. The film's deepest fear might be about overload, not the supernatural.

Blind since age five, Hong Kong violinist Mun undergoes a corneal transplant and starts seeing things that shouldn't be there: shadowy figures escorting the newly dead, ghosts replaying their final moments, unsettling apparitions in ordinary places like a classroom. When the visions curdle into full-blown hauntings, Mun travels to northern Thailand to track down her donor's identity, hoping the dead girl's history will explain why her eyes won't stop screaming. The Pang brothers split directing duties here, and the result is early-2000s Asian horror operating at dangerous efficiency: jump scares earned through sound design and dread, not volume.
