The Fall of the House of Usher

• Luis Buñuel co-wrote the screenplay and served as assistant director — his second collaboration with Epstein after 1926's Mauprat — but he quit partway through the shoot after clashing with Epstein over how far the film strayed from Poe's original text.
• The House's 'breathing' is old-fashioned stagecraft, not a chemical trick: wind machines animate curtains and scattered dry leaves throughout the sets, and Epstein brought on a dedicated slow-motion cameraman (credited as Hébert) alongside heavy use of double exposure to get the hypnagogic effect.
• The exterior of the Usher mansion was actually a miniature model, which Epstein disguised by blanketing it in artificial mist rather than building it full-scale.
• Madeline Usher was played by Marguerite Gance, wife of legendary director Abel Gance, who himself turns up in the film in a small role.
• The print became the founding acquisition of what grew into the Cinémathèque française in 1935, and was later restored twice — first photochemically in 1997 by the Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique and Cinémathèque française, then digitally in 2013.

The House doesn't haunt Roderick — Roderick's psyche IS the House. Every cracking wall and swinging window maps to his deteriorating mental state, which is why the collapse and Madeline's revival are perfectly synchronized. The film rarely shows the House as a neutral, independent structure outside Roderick's fear of it, which supports reading the building as a projection of his mind rather than just a setting.

Madeline is never actually dead when entombed — the film makes clear she's cataleptic, not deceased — and Epstein seems to know the audience will suspect this too, which reframes her 'resurrection' not as supernatural horror but as the film's most grounded moment. The real horror is that Roderick buried a living woman because his obsession with capturing her on canvas overrode his ability to recognize she was still breathing.

The visiting friend is arguably the audience's only anchor of sanity, yet Epstein fragments his perspective so thoroughly through fog, superimposition, and slow motion that we can't fully trust his read on events either. He's present for nearly all of it and still can't stop any of it — which is Epstein's real argument: horror isn't about arriving too late, it's about watching the whole thing happen and still being powerless to change the outcome.

Roderick Usher is obsessed with painting a portrait of his dying wife Madeline, convinced her sickness and the House itself are bound together by the same rot. His friend, summoned to the mansion, arrives and stays to watch it all unfold, powerless to talk Roderick out of his conviction that woman and house are dying as one organism. The walls breathe. The curtains stir on wind that shouldn't be there. Epstein buries Poe's text under avalanches of fog, double exposure, and slow motion, letting the architecture rot in real time. Madeline dies, gets sealed in the family crypt — except she isn't really dead, only cataleptic — and claws her way back out. The House starts coming apart at its own foundations, fire eating the halls behind her. But Epstein swerves hard from Poe here: instead of burying everyone in the wreckage, he lets Roderick and Madeline escape together, watching their inheritance collapse from a safe distance, wrapped in each other's arms. Poe adapted by someone who understood horror is atmosphere first, plot never — and who decided, in the end, his lovers deserved to live.
